Have you ever looked out at your garden and thought “I wonder what else is possible for this space?” or even “Where’s all the wildlife?” I found myself thinking that very thing, last winter. This blog is about how I transformed our back lawn into an edible garden full of flowers, herbs and vegetables, and I’ll give you step-by-step instructions on how you can elevate your own space, no matter where you live. Want to surprise someone with a beautiful bunch of flowers? We'll be at the Lakewood Community Festival, Saturday Sept. 8th at Madison Park from 11-5.
We've got lots of zinnias, queen anne's lace, wildflowers, and more. You can make your own bouquets and we'll have some coloring activities too. See you there! As the summer shines on, I hope you are enjoying the warm weather and reconnecting with nature. We’ve been busy in the garden, planting different varieties of flowers and herbs and transforming our Lakewood backyard into a colorful habitat for pollinators. Our little plot of land is now overflowing with fresh, sweet-scented flowers. Now we want to share our harvest with you! At our first-ever event, we’ll be at ThreeFoldGifts’ pop-up shop in Lakewood on Saturday from 10AM-6PM, selling flowers and custom bouquets. Please stop by and say hello if you are in the neighborhood. We’ll harvest our flowers on Friday night, bringing you the freshest selection of locally grown flowers and herbs to choose from at our Saturday event. You can pick up a pre-made bouquet or you can choose from our fresh flower selection and we’ll make a bouquet on-the-spot for you. Vibrant blooms will include pink and purple Zinnias, orange Daylilies, white Queen Anne’s Lace, pink and yellow Cosmos, pink and white Yarrow and a variety of wildflowers including Larkspur, Allysum, Bachelor’s Buttons, Black-Eyed-Susan and more. Did you know that 80% of fresh flowers in the US are imported? At Wildflower Lab, we’d like to change that, and give our community the option of buying locally grown fresh flowers. We interplant fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers for a more bountiful harvest and use organic techniques reminiscent of the first cultivated plots for the best outcomes. We're planting native wildflowers and perennials that attract and protect beneficial wildlife and pollinators, and we’d love to talk to you about transforming your backyard into an edible garden. About UsAt Wildflower Lab it all begins with the soil. We believe in using organic, regenerative practices. We don't use any chemicals, just healthy heaps of compost. We're proud advocates of the slow flower movement and try to incorporate native plants into our farm program whenever we can.
To extend the life of cut flower bouquets, we recommend adding a dash of organic, raw cane sugar to the vase when your flowers reach their destination. The best urban farms start with a plan. While it’s fun to browse your local nursery for plants and pick things up on a whim, an urban farm is a business, and each decision should be considered in this context. I’ll show you a great way to stay organized while you are in the initial stages of designing your plot of land. The steps are easy but there’s a lot to think about, so I documented what worked for me so you can have the confidence to do it yourself. Garden, flower and farm books help me determine what my ultimate dream garden looks like, what will work best for my land, and what new plants I should buy. I’m bibliophile and reading about gardens and learning new techniques stirs my soul and makes working outdoors that much more fun. I tend to gravitate towards books that provide specific information on topics that I’m passionate about like garden design, organic practices, urban farming, edible gardens and herb and flower books. Here are a few books that I’m reading right now to gain inspiration:
I’m going to show you how to grow the best fresh garden strawberries in your backyard so that you can pick sweet produce all season long.
